On Monday, the Agra police had arrested Sharma in a hate speech case during the memorial meeting for VHP leader Arun Mahore who was murdered while on his way to the temple in the Muslim dominated Mantola area of Agra. The case names three BJP leaders, while FIRs and non-bailable warrants had been issued against unknown people including the three BJP leaders.
On 18th March, the BJP had organised a ‘Dalit Mahagarjna March’ against the district administration’s dictatorial attitude towards the BJP leaders which had ended in a flop http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/bjps-dalit-mahagarjana-march-ends-in-a-flop-in-agra/1/624423. sparking allegations of a deal struck between Katheria and the administration that the march will be ended in return of an assurance that the BJP leaders named in the FIR will not be arrested. However, the arrest of Kundanika Sharma proved that just like the BJP’s march, the ‘deal’ Katheria had struck with the administration also flopped, angering the BJP leaders and workers alike who were seen openly blaming Katheria for the arrest at the Agra Civil Courts.
Meanwhile, Kundanika Sharma got an interim bail till April 2 on grounds of faulty investigation and incomplete documentation by the local police. They are still blaming Katheria for weakening the party’s stance by striking a deal with the administration that it failed to honour.
The two other leaders named in the FIR, Shashanks Chowdhary and Ashok Lavania are also feeling the heat as they fear that they could also be picked up by the police before Holi.
A local party leader alleged that it appeared that Katheria is deliberately weakening the party’s position before the administration to eliminate any competition in the party, while saving himself from the hate-speech case by striking a deal with the police, when his speech was the most incriminating. He seems to have forgotten that he has reached the Lok Sabha riding the shoulders of these very party workers and leaders whom he is now so coolly sidelining. In the future, the local party leaders will not be fooled by him and whether he gets re-elected from Agra or not, will depend entirely on his future conduct.
