LUCKNOW: There has been no headway in the state government’s decision to regulate private universities in Uttar Pradesh that have been accused of running courses arbitrarily which often either do not have recognition or approval from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC), Bar Council of India (BCI) and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) During their week-long agitation carrier this month, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers alleged that Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRM) located on Lucknow-Deva Road, Barabanki, was admitting students students in various law courses which were not approved by the BCL. Later, police lathicharge on the ABVP protesters outside SRM on September I left several of them injured. The incident turned into a major issue as chief minister Yogi Adityanath condemned police action on peaceful protesters and higher education minister Yogendra Upadhyaya announced private universities will not be allowed to run courses arbitrarily.
On September 8, the state government and on the lines of Samarth portal for state funded varsities, soon a dedicated portal will be developed to connect private universities and selfnancing colleges. There are 8.000 private self-financing col leges and 51 private universities in the state. Once these private universities and colleges are linked with a dedicated portal, i will help the government check and prevent recurrence of SRMU-like episodes. A fortnight has passed since the government made this announcement.
