NEW DELHI: Setting a benchmark for a humane stray dog management approach, the Uttar Pradesh govt has introduced a reward system for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and NGOs that excel in sterilisation, vaccination, and feeding programmes, and asked them to identify and notify “appropriate feeding points” keeping in view the territorial aspect of canine life.Issued on Sept 4 as part of the state’s overarching decision in sync with the Supreme Court’s August 22 order, the move, focusing on feeding, sterilization, vaccination, humane care and incentives for good performance, aims at supporting effective and scientific implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, while recognizing outstanding contributions on the ground. A key focus of the state’s order is the designation of safe and responsible feeding spots for community dogs in every municipal ward across UP. The move will ensure that the dogs are fed within their territories in order to reduce conflict, safeguard public spaces, and promote compassionate care. “The ULBs/organizations achieving good results in sterilization and vaccination and feeding management shall be encouraged/rewarded by the state government,” said the state’s order, which aims to encourage proactive participation, promote compassionate care, ensure public safety and strengthen community involvement.
